Travel Guide To Adriatic Rivieria

guide to adriatic-rivieria

Old and new sit happily together where the flat and sandy coastline of the Adriatic Riviera edges the fertile farmlands of the Province of Emilia Romagna. The area's history and heritage includes Roman relics, well preserved castles and medieval towns.

Take care! Pickpockets can be a problem in large towns so it's advisable to carry money in a belt or inner pocket. Formal wear is expected when visiting religious buildings as well as reasonable dress.

Food: Excellent restaurants are scattered around the beautiful countryside that surrounds Rimini. Local specialities include seafood, pizza and pasta: notably the local tagliatelle and tortelloni. Wine of the region is red, sparking lambrusco.

Nightlife: The bustling resorts of the Adriatic coast offer visitors an international atmosphere and some of the best clubbing to be found in Italy.

Shopping: The local markets offer excellent value for money. Bargain buys include leather goods and shoes.

Days out: Bargain hunters shouldn't miss out on a trip to the duty-free Republic of San Marino - a great source for designer names and luxury items.

Events: For information on seasonal festivals contact Tourist Information on +44 (020) 7408 1254.

Cavtat
Cavtat is a city on the edge of the Zupska Bay with subtropical vegetation. It has numerous beautiful beaches and bays, luxurious hotels and camps. Cavtat is an old Illyrian settlement, known as Epidaurum in Roman times, and was destroyed by the Avars in the sixth century.

Rimini
(20 minutes from Rimini Airport). An ever-popular resort with families who return year after year to relax along the ten mile beach and participate in the variety of children's attractions. The waters of the Adriatic are warm and inviting and home to many interesting and friendly mammals.

The whole town is geared towards tourists, so there are bars and nightclubs everywhere. Once the sun goes down, the streets of Rimini come alive with lights, colour and noise as the sunbathers of the day become the revellers of the evening.

Sirmione
(60 minutes from airport) Once a Roman spa, Sirmione enjoys a spectacular setting at the end of a narrow spit of land that juts out of the southern shore of Lake Garda. The peninsula is so narrow in places that the town at the end is virtually car-free. Sirmione's unusually well preserved 15th century Scaligeri castle is a major attraction in the region and contributes to what can be quite a crowd of visitors in the summer.
