Travel Guide To Bodrum

guide to bodrum Steeped in scenery, culture and history, the Bodrum peninsula is now easy to get to from an airport opened in 1998 and well served by a 24-hour network of Dolmus buses that link even the small resorts to the bustling town of Bodrum. The arrival of the airport means that the area has become far more developed than it was as recently as the mid 1990s.

Bodrum is a major resort in its own right, dominated by a well preserved Crusader castle, The town of Bodrum still retains the flavour of a real Turkish town, albeit one full of night clubs and a great range of restaurants. In addition, there's excellent late night shopping and a large outdoor market every Thursday.

Food: As one of Turkey's ‘Big Three’ resort towns, Bodrum offers a full range of eating options at all hours of the day and night.

Nightlife: The liveliest in Turkey, Bodrum boasts Halikarnas - claimed to be the biggest open air night club in the world, together with a host of competing establishments stretched along the harbour front, including one that's based on an enormous catamaran that sets sail at 3am and returns around 5am.

Shopping: Not only does Bodrum offer pretty much all-night late-night shopping, but it has an extensive open air market on Thursdays. Take advantage of the very reasonable prices for Turkish carpets, kilims, leather goods and 'fake' designer-label clothing.

Days out: Take the time to go around the Crusader Castle - it's been well developed as a museum, with plenty of excellent exhibits and shady courtyards; history buffs may find the long drive to the ancient Roman city of Ephesus rewarding; for a fun day out there's a modern aqua park at Dedeman, near Ortakent.

Events: The Bodrum Festival takes place in September, and features events staged at the restored open-air Roman theatre to the north of the town centre. Tourist information telephone number (UK): +44 (020) 7629 7771.

Additional Bodrum Information

bodrum airport transfers

Altinkum
(75 mins from Bodrum airport). Quiet Aegean resort handy not just for two key ancient sites but one natural wonder as well. The Temple of Apollo at Didyma is just three miles (6km) away, and the extensive Roman ruins at Ephesus – the most extensive in Europe - are within easy striking distance for a day out. Also nearby is the extraordinary sight of the calcium deposits at Pamukkale, formed over millions of years from a spring bubbling up from deep in the mountains. Altkinkum itself is a quiet town with few nightlife and restaurant options, so is best suited to families and couples seeking a leisurely-paced time in the sun.

Bitez

(45 mins from Bodrum airport). Small, pleasant town set in its own bay with a good beach and plenty of water sports facilities available. Local conditions make it particularly good for windsurfing. There are limited restaurant and nightlife options, but for pleasure seekers and shoppers lively Gumbet is nearby, and big, bustling Bodrum is just a 20-minute journey by taxi or all-night Dolmus bus. Among the restaurants in Bitez, the Sultan is of particular ‘must visit’.

Bodrum

(30 mins from Bodrum airport). The limited beach facilities of bustling Bodrum are made up for by easy access by 24-hour dolmus bus to the peninsula's more scenic resorts. Alternatively, sail away on a wooden Gulet boat to a quiet cove not accessible by land.

Gumbet

(55 mins from Bodrum airport/ 240 minutes from Dalaman airport). Just over the headland from Bodrum, Gumbet is a lively resort with a good selection of restaurants, bars and clubs. And if that’s not enough, the bigger fleshpots of Bodrum are just a 20-minute dolmus or taxi ride away. For shoppers, there's a big, modern US-style shopping mall nearby. Not recommended if you’re looking for a quiet week in the sun.

Ortakent

(90 mins from Bodrum airport). At the centre of the Bodrum peninsula, Ortakent is handy by dolmus bus for all of the area's coastal resorts. It also boasts a modern aqua park. Will suit couples and families.

Turgutreis

(60 mins from Bodrum airport). Named after a 16th century pirate, Turgutreis has only recently seen much resort development around its picturesque harbour, which is still home to a working fishing fleet. As such it’s fairly quiet, with a decent range of restaurants but limited nightlife, visitors looking for livelier nightlife and more extensive shopping options than the Saturday market can head by dolmus bus or taxi to Bodrum, which is eight miles (14km) away. Will suit families and couples, rather than action-seeking singles. It is the second largest city in the Bodrum Peninsula.

Yalikavak

(90 mins from Bodrum airport). Quiet village set on a bay renowned for its sunsets, sponge diving and some excellent seafood restaurants. Good for windsurfing. Quiet nightlife but the bustling town of Bodrum is just a 25-minute journey by taxi or all-night dolmus bus. Likely to suit more contemplative couples and families.
