The countryside is torn and patched by old lava which in places looks like a kind of lunar landscape. Lanzarote plays host to some of the best beaches in the Canary Islands. Puerto del Carmen boasts no less than 5km of golden sand, while quite beaches can be found in Playa de los Pocillos and Matagorda. Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands.

Shopping:
There are tax concessions on luxury goods. Check out the markets at Tequise on a Sunday where you can buy many interesting craft items, souvenirs and local produce, and Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.

Days out: Go underground at Jameos del Agua and enjoy the cavern's clubs and tapas bars; take a Jeep safari; visit the volcanoes in the Timanfaya National Park; check out Fire Mountain at Timanfaya.

(25 minutes from Arrecife airport). A modern, tree-lined resort with an 18 hole golf course, an aquapark and a kids beach. Nightlife is low key. Suitable for families and couples.

(30 minutes from Arrecife airport). Small relaxed resort makes a good base from which to explore for singles and couples.


Puerto del Carmen
