Also known as Zakynthos and located just to the south of Kefalonia and is the third largest of the Ionian Islands. On Zante you'll discover secluded coves among elegant towns, hillside farming villages, wild flowers, and scenic white beaches, busy with daytime sunbathers and nesting turtles.
Its lush interior makes Zante ('Flower of the Levante') a great place for hiring bikes and exploring. The seas around Zante form a conservation area for the loggerheaded turtles, so water sports activities are curtailed around Lagana Bay at certain times.
During the summer months and especially in August, rainfall is very rare, while north winds are very common in this month.
Food: Fruit liquors and mandolado nougat are the local delicacies. Try the stifado rabbit stew and the souvlaki kebabs. You'll be able to find 3-course meals and beers for bargain prices here. Don't leave without sampling the island's famous mandolato (nougat).
Nightlife: There best selections of bars, clubs and tavernas are to be found in Laganas and Argassi.
Shopping: Zante Town offers as good shopping as you'll find anywhere in Greece, being packed with little shops and markets. Good buys include jewellery, leather, rugs, embroidery, local arts and crafts.
Days out: Meet the world famous loggerhead turtles at Kalamaki; see the spectacular views from Keri; explore the mysterious Blue Caves at the north-eastern tip of the island; marvel at the harbour-front church of the island patron saint, Ayios Dionysios. For those seeking a place to soak up the sun, Smugglers Cove also known as Navagio has to be the most famous beach on the island if not in Greece.
Events: Zante Town Festival takes place during July. For tourist details call (UK) +44 (020) 7734 5997 |
